The Algarve as you have never seen it: a journey through the Algarvian Barrocal

Beyond the coastline, the interior of the Algarve breathes peace and tranquillity. From the Serra de Monchique to the Serra do Caldeirão, you can appreciate fields of fig trees, carob and olive trees and the legendary almond trees, painting the interior of the region white. We give you 5 suggestions where you will discover a more authentic Algarve full of incredible cultural influence.

Salema

Salema is located in one of the most preserved coastal regions of the Algarve, the Alentejano South-west Natural Park e Vicentina coast. This former fishing village is situated by the sea and is as picturesque as it is peaceful.

Located only a few minutes from the main coastal road, but a completely different world from the tourist spots that exist in other parts of the Algarve.

Situated at the top of a cove that features magnificent rock formations and a beautiful sandy beach that is lined with the old houses that formed the original village. Salema beach is dotted with small fishing boats still bringing in the catch of the day and at the western end of the beach, among the rocks, it is possible to spot some dinosaur fossils. The whole village conveys peace and well-being.

Algar Seco, Carvoeiro

In the western Algarve you will find the pretty village of Carvoeiro. Originally a fishing village, Carvoeiro is now a popular destination for visitors of all nationalities and is considered one of the best places in the world to retire, as well as having one of the most picturesque beaches. In fact the whole coastline around Carvoeiro is a fascinating mosaic of caves and rock formations interspersed with uniquely beautiful beaches.

On Carvoeiro beach you will find the wooden walkway that follows the cliffs down to Algar Seco - a naturally sculpted network of rock formations, caves, tunnels and rock pools with fantastic views over the ocean.

Alcoutim

On the border with Spain and close to the banks of the Guadiana you will find Alcoutim. Alcoutim is a small and sparsely populated village, quite authentic and representative of the Algarve interior. There is a 14th century Moorish castle which towers above the town offering beautiful views across the Guadiana to neighbouring Spain.

Alcoutim often escapes most tourists, so if you are looking to discover a less touristy Algarve, Alcoutim is the right choice.

The cultural richness of Alcoutim will surprise you. The town hosts an annual cultural festival, called the Festival do Contrabando - the Smugglers' Festival - which celebrates not only the history of smuggling on the Guadiana, but also the exchange of cultures and traditions between the people of Alcoutim in Portugal and those of Sanlúcar in Spain.

The more adventurous go to Alcoutim to cross the bridge that starts in one country and ends in the other, crossing time zones along the way.

Alte and the Vicarage Waterfall

Alte is a picturesque village in a beautiful rural area inland from Loulé between the Barrocal and the Serra do Caldeirão.

Known as the "most typical village in the Algarve", Alte is characterised by its fertile fields and traditional whitewashed houses and colourful tiles.

Close to the village of Alte is also the Cascata do Vigário, one of the largest waterfalls in the Algarve. With a waterfall of 24 meters that falls over an oval lake perfect for swimming.

Come and discover the interior and less touristy Algarve and let yourself be enchanted by the unique beauty of this region.
