Golf in Algarve

Opportunities for sport in Vilamoura are not confined to golf and water sports.

Visitors and residents have a wide range of sports facilities to choose from:

a riding centre; an Olympic shooting club; a lawn bowls club; a tennis club and several sports centres where you can play squash & shooting, badminton, do bodybuilding, swimming, aerobics, among many other activities...

The Algarve is renowned for some of the world's finest championship golf courses — and Vilamoura offers five of them all within the resort. All of 18 holes or more each superbly designed. These attract dedicated players and champions worldwide — and are host to numerous prestigious tournaments, several televised. If you're a keen golfer, Vilamoura is the place to be.

Victoria Course
The Victoria Clube de Golfe Course is the most recent course to be opened to the public in the Algarve. Laid out on virtually flat terrain covering some 90 hectares it includes a series of constructed mounds specially landscaped to emulate the outline of inland hills on the horizon - a feature that enriches the course with a sense of movement and harmony. The series of beautiful lakes and waterfalls also helps to provide an attractive background whilst playing the course.

This is at present the longest 18 holes golf course in Portugal and promises to be a notable course in Europe. Each hole has a minimum of five tees from which to play thus making the course suitable for golfers of all handicap levels. Before playing it could be advisable to take advantage of the immense putting green of around 2,500 m2 to "feel the green" in that very important end game.

Laguna
The 18 Holes have been laid out over level ground and provide and with the exception of the eleventh and twelve that take the player around and over a lake, it is open fairways for the player with very few trees to present difficulties. It is a course that can be likened to some degree to the challenges that are provided by a Links course. However, there are many water hazards with strategically placed bunkers in open terrain. These factors combined with the occasional strong wind make for an interesting round.

Millennium
Martin Hawtree has extended his original concept of the original 27 Holes by adding another 9 and created and creating two distinctive courses. These new holes are part of the Millennium Course and wander amongst the parkland of pine tress that are often found on the coast in the Algarve. The course is a pleasure to play with subtle with few very tricky situations except for possibly the the par-3 sixth with its lake on the left of the fairway waiting for erring balls.

Vila Sol The great variety of trees here adds special charm to a course blessed with excellent facilities. In 1992 and 1993, it was selected for the Portuguese Open, thus consolidating its international reputation.
that very important end game.

The Old Course The English architect of this course has carefully maintained the original topographical nature of this undulating terrain. Changes when necessary have been kept to a minimum to preserve the natural state of being. The outward nine-holes are testing for a golfer starting with a par-4 of 381 metres. Next an even longer par-4 hole, then another par-4 of 385 metres. To follow the sixth and eighth holes, both par-5s, are awaiting the player with each a little under 500 metres. The back nine has two par-3 holes that are attractively designed. The par-5 on the fourteenth is particularly difficult to achieve with a tricky green awaiting the player.

Pinhal
This course is laid through the pine tree forest of the area and is set back from the tourist beach area. The outward nine holes wander through the holiday villas that line the fairways. The well-positioned bunkers make the course very enjoyable to the players, testing their choice of clubs and their accuracy. The Par-4 on the fourth hole is difficult to achieve with water waiting for the erring shot. The Par-3 on the eighth of 149 metres is tricky than it first appears. The back nine-holes have a more open feel but the slightly altered fifteenth will cause a problem to meet the Par-4 it requires.

Parque da Floresta A course built on hillsides and over broken ground, with views over a fishing village. With a number of different hazards such as bunkers, lakes and rivers, it provides a challenge of great diversity.

Palmares
This is a course of great beauty, perfectly blending beach and mountain scenery. Its clubhouse, set between the 9th and 10th holes, provides a fantastic panorama over 25 kilometres of the Atlantic coastline.

Penina
The first golf course to be built in the Algarve, Penina is considered the masterpiece of Sir Henry Cotton. It has been the location for five of the Portuguese Open Championships.

Alto Golf
Alto Golf runs through two valleys and was the last course to be designed by Sir Henry Cotton. The 16th, 'The Giant', is 604 metres for a par 5 and is thought to be the longest in Europe.

Vale da Pinta
Situated near Carvoeiro in an old olive grove, Vale da Pinta is a championship course that is, nonetheless, enjoyable at any handicap.

Quinta do Gramacho
With just nine holes, Quinta do Gramacho has nevertheless a complete course layout, thanks to its double tees and greens. The natural vegetation surrounding it is very beautiful, blending perfectly with a number of artificial lakes and gently sloping fairways.

Vale do Milho
This is a short nine-hole course which is visually very attractive, yet surprising because of its challenging nature. Ideal for practising with short irons.

Salgados
Situated close to the sea, Salgados and its lakes pose a challenge to the technical skills of golfers.

Pine Cliffs
Known for the impeccable condition in which it is kept, Pine Cliffs is a nine-hole course that runs along impressive cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Ocean Course
The Ocean Course, part of the Vale de Lobo tourist resort, is located near the sea, thus creating very pleasant conditions for a round.

Royal Course
This is one of the best-known courses in the world, because of its famous par 3 hole, which requires a shot of more than 200 metres over three spectacular cliffs.

Quinta do Lago
Situated in an outstanding resort area, the Quinta do Lago courses are famous in the international golfing world.

Ria Formosa
Although similar to Quinta do Lago, Ria Formosa offers different challenges to the player.

Pinheiros Altos
This is a highly original course with two sets of nine holes that have completely opposing characteristics. The spacious practice area is much used by a number of professional golfers in the period before the tournament season begins.

San Lorenzo
Rare and many-faceted beauty matched by impeccable upkeep make this course a true pearl of Portuguese golf. Its 18 widely ranging holes run past pine trees, lakes and beaches beside the Atlantic Ocean.

Benamor
This course was the first to open east of Faro, the capital of the Algarve, and lies just outside Tavira. Benemor course is half an hour driving from Vilamoura.

Quinta da Ria
This spectacular 18-hole golf course between Tavira and Monte Gordo spreads along an almost flat surface of 660,000 square metres, hanging over it and with a stunning view of the sea.

Quinta de Cima
This new sister course to Quinta da Ria is of a championship character, which will provide an enjoyable challenge for most players. Set in rolling land dotted with almond trees, it provides open fairways, well-placed bunkers and enough water to attract the odd, misdirected golf ball. The first two holes indicate the true nature of the course, emphasising the need for good club selection combined with accuracy. Players are already making their comments about the tricky par 5 16th hole and the memorable 18th.

Atlantic Golf Course
Located close to the historic town of Castro Marim, the course runs through undulating hills dotted with pines and occasional views across the River Guadiana to neighbouring Spain. This course calls for careful play, with strategically placed water hazards and fairway terrain that can place you in trouble. This is not to mention the well-placed bunkers waiting for an errant ball. The par 3 on the 17th is a hole that calls for special club selection, with bunkers in front of the green and a lake behind, whilst at the same time subject to the prevailing winds off the sea.

Balaia Golf Course
Opened in April 2001, this small and attractive nine-hole course offers the opportunity to improve your iron shots and your short game. It carries the title of 'Executive Course', which implies the quality of its layout and subtle challenges. Located at the back of a holiday complex, it presents from the first tee a charming view of most of the course, with the ribbon of blue sea as its background. A course to test the ability to control shot length and direction.

Boavista Golf Course
Boavista offers two distinct sections of play, providing a variety of attractive and interesting holes. From the first to the last putt on the 18th green, it promises a sensible game for the average player. Umbrella pines, blossoming almond, fig, palm and olive trees line the rolling fairways, weaving their way between water hazards and shrewdly placed bunkers. Breathtaking views, spectacular scenery and the clear Atlantic Ocean, which is visible from most holes, all combine to make this course a delight for the golfer.
