There are a number of reminders of the city's history; its monuments, archaelogical sites, the atmosphere itself of streets and neighbourhoods. The historical centre has monuments dating from almost every century. This city was considered "The Unique City Resort" - European Capital for the business and leisure travelers.

Torre de Belém
The Tower of Belém was built in an effort to defend the estuary of the Tagus River. King Dom João II (1455-1495) wanted to exclude hostile ships from the river, but it was only his successor Dom Manuel I (1469-1521) who ended up building the tower. It was designed by architect and sculptor Francisco Arruda, with notable traces of Moorish influence. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
