The São Roque Chapel is located in the neighbourhood of the hotel. It was built at the end of the 15th century to honour a vow made by the second Governor of Machico to the saint for his miracle of ending the then current plague.
The village of Machico has another beautiful old church, dedicated to Senhor dos Milagres, the Lord of Miracles, who saved Machico in the terrible flood of 1803. The anniversary is celebrated at a large festival every year on the 9th October.
For fine panoramas of Madeira's east coast, Columbus' island of Porto Santo and the desert islands, there are two excellent viewpoints above Machico.
With its sports facilities and entertainment programmes on this fabulous island, the Dom Pedro Baía Club offers both luxurious comfort and interesting activities for the most active holidaymaker. Reception will be happy to arrange golf at Santo da Serra and at Palheiro, and diving lessons at the internationally accredited school in Machico.
